High Temperature Heat Pumps
Clade’s high temperature heat pumps operate on the same principles as conventional heat pumps, but are engineered to deliver flow temperatures significantly higher, typically in the range of 60°C to 80°C or more. This allows them to replace gas boilers without requiring oversized radiators or drastic retrofits. By using enhanced components, special refrigerant cycles (such as injection stages), and advanced control strategies, these systems can maintain high efficiency even under challenging temperature demands.
ELM HEAT PUMP
The Elm high temperature (HT) heat pump is part of our R290 heat pumps range, engineered as a direct replacement for traditional boilers. Available in 50kW and 70kW models, it delivers up to 80°C flow temperature with 70°C return while achieving 100% heat decarbonisation without changes to your building.
YEW HEAT PUMP
The Yew high temperature heat pump is as efficient as our standard temperature R290 heat pumps when operated at lower temperatures and a direct boiler replacement, this opens up the opportunity to improve building or system performance over time.
WHAT ARE HIGH TEMPERATURE (HT) HEAT PUMPS?
HT heat pumps are a new generation of low-carbon heating technology designed to deliver much hotter water than standard heat pumps. While conventional models often top out at 50–55°C, high temperature systems can reliably produce flow temperatures of 65–80°C or more. This makes them a strong alternative to gas or oil boilers, as they can connect directly to existing radiator networks without extensive upgrades. By combining advanced refrigerants with innovative compressor designs, they achieve the high outputs needed for older properties, commercial buildings, and colder climates, all while lowering reliance on fossil fuels.
How Do High Temperature Heat Pumps Work?
High temperature heat pumps extract energy from the air, ground or water and upgrade it to a higher temperature for space heating or hot water. They achieve this using advanced refrigerants and compressor technology capable of operating at higher pressures. Some models use two-stage compression or injection cycles to deliver flow temperatures of 60–80°C while maintaining efficiency. This design allows them to operate effectively even when outdoor conditions are cold, making them more versatile than standard heat pumps.
Advantages of High Temperature Heat Pumps
Compatibility with existing systems – They can integrate with existing radiator infrastructure and avoid the need to install large new emitters or upgraded pipework.
Faster and hotter output – Specifically designed to provide higher heat outputs, making them well-suited for older properties with higher heating demands.
Effective in colder climates – Built to maintain performance at lower outdoor temperatures, ensuring reliable heating where conventional heat pumps may struggle.
Retrofit viability – Particularly valuable in heritage or harder-to-upgrade buildings, where insulation improvements or emitter upgrades aren’t feasible.
Efficiency retention – Modern HT units can achieve COP/SCOP figures close to those of “lower-temperature” heat pumps, narrowing historical efficiency gaps.
Process & commercial uses – In industrial or district heat settings, HT heat pumps can support process heating, waste heat recovery, or networked heat generation.
How do I know if my commercial building is suitable?
Commercial buildings with existing radiator systems are well suited to high temperature heat pumps, due to increased heating or hot water demands, and limited scope for major upgrades. They perform reliably in colder climates and are particularly effective in older or less insulated properties where higher flow temperatures are essential. With adequate space for plant and sufficient electrical capacity, most commercial sites can integrate high temperature heat pumps as a practical, low-carbon alternative to boilers.
Clade Engineering offers air, ground, and water source heat pumps and refrigeration that use eco-friendly CO2 coolant and can operate either singly or as part of a multi-unit system.
