Air to Water Heat Pumps
Clade’s air to water heat pumps deliver powerful, low-carbon heating and hot water for commercial and industrial buildings. By capturing energy from the air and transferring it into water, they provide an efficient, sustainable alternative to boilers. With a range of models designed to meet diverse capacity requirements, our systems combine robust engineering with advanced refrigerants to ensure reliable performance in every climate. Built in the UK, they are future-ready solutions for organisations committed to decarbonising heat.
ACER COMMERCIAL AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMP
The 50kW-75kW Acer is low noise, small, easy to install and affordable. Using CO2 as its refrigerant, it delivers high temperatures of 70 to 80 degrees, as well as the high performance associated with CO2.
ACER 2 COMMERCIAL AIR TO WATER CO2 HEAT PUMP
Introducing the Acer 2, the new generation of our flagship Acer CO2 heat pump, designed for ultra-low noise performance, and easier to install and maintain than ever. It delivers the same outstanding functionality in a significantly quieter unit.
MAPLE COMMERCIAL AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMP
The Maple is our CO2 modular high capacity heat pump for heating and hot water production. Up to 500KW of heating capacity at -5C ambient temperature and 70C flow temperatures all at high COPs.
ELM COMMERCIAL AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMP
The Elm high temperature (HT) heat pump is part of our R290 heat pumps range, engineered as a direct replacement for traditional boilers. Available in 50kW and 70kW models, it delivers up to 80°C flow temperature with 70°C return while achieving 100% heat decarbonisation without changes to your building.
BIRCH AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMP
The Birch heat pump is part of our R290 range, fitting easily into existing systems to provide hot water up to 60°C. Ideal for quiet areas, Birch standard low-noise models are the quietest and most affordable options.
ROWAN AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMP
The Rowan is part of our range of R290 heat pumps, offering an affordable, low carbon solution with superb heat service. Compact and easy to install, our Rowan range goes up to 375KW at -5C ambient.
LARCH AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMP
The Larch cascade heat pump is a combination of our R290 air source heat pump and R600a water source heat pump. This system closely matches a traditional boiler system’s flow and return temperatures of 82⁰C / 71⁰C.
YEW AIR TO WATER HEAT PUMP
The Yew is as efficient as our standard temperature r290 heat pumps when operated at lower temperatures, this opens up the opportunity to improve building or system performance over time.
What Are Air to Water Heat Pumps?
Air to water heat pumps are the most widely used type of air source system, designed to supply both heating and hot water through a building’s central network. Instead of pushing warm air into rooms, they raise the temperature of water that circulates through radiators, underfloor heating, and storage tanks. By operating with natural refrigerants such as CO₂ and propane, these systems combine high efficiency with very low environmental impact. On average, they deliver several units of heat for every unit of electricity used, helping organisations cut energy costs while reducing reliance on fossil fuels.
How Do Air to Water Heat Pumps Work?
Air to water heat pumps operate by extracting thermal energy from the surrounding air, even at low outdoor temperatures, and upgrading it for use in a building’s heating system. At the heart of the process is a refrigerant cycle: air passes over an evaporator coil, where the refrigerant absorbs heat and changes state. This refrigerant is then compressed, increasing its temperature and pressure, before passing through a condenser. Here, the heat is transferred into the water circuit, which feeds radiators, underfloor heating, or hot water storage. Once the heat is released, the refrigerant expands, cools, and begins the cycle again. With inverter-driven compressors and intelligent controls, modern systems optimise this process for maximum efficiency and year-round reliability.
Key Benefits of Air to Water Heat Pumps
High efficiency & low carbon: They can deliver 3–5 units of heat for each unit of electricity used, making them much more efficient than fossil-fuel systems.
Versatile application: They serve both space heating and hot water, replacing conventional boilers and integrating with wet heating systems.
Compatibility with existing systems: They can retrofit into central heating networks with radiators or underfloor heating, with minimal rewiring.
Cold-weather performance: Modern designs maintain performance in sub-zero conditions, allowing heating even when outdoor temperatures are low.
Long lifespan & low maintenance: Typically lasting 20+ years, with relatively simple servicing needs.
Air to Air vs Air to Water Heat Pumps
Air source heat pumps come in two main forms, air to air, and air to water. Air to air systems deliver warmth by circulating heated air through fans, much like traditional air conditioning units, and they do not provide hot water. By contrast, air to water systems are designed to heat water, which is then distributed through radiators, underfloor heating, and hot water tanks. Due to this versatility, they are the more common choice. If you’re unsure which option best suits your building, our team can provide expert guidance.
Clade Engineering offers air, ground, and water source heat pumps and refrigeration that use eco-friendly CO2 coolant and can operate either singly or as part of a multi-unit system.
