R290 Heat Pumps

Clade Engineering’s R290 heat pumps are designed to provide a more eco-friendly and efficient heating solution by using propane, a natural refrigerant that’s free from F-Gases. For businesses aiming to reduce their carbon footprint, this makes it a sustainable choice that doesn’t compromise on quality. Perfect for applications up to 200KW, R290 heat pumps are also versatile enough to handle larger spaces by linking multiple units together. Our Elm heat pump is part of our R290 range that is the UK’s first direct boiler replacement, helping meet today’s sustainability goals while keeping operational costs down.

Elm Heat Pump

The Elm high temperature (HT) heat pump is part of our R290 heat pumps range, engineered as a direct replacement for traditional boilers. Available in 50kW and 70kW models, it delivers up to 80°C flow temperature with 70°C return while achieving 100% heat decarbonisation without changes to your building.

Birch Heat Pump

The Birch heat pump is part of our R290 range, fitting easily into existing systems to provide hot water up to 60°C. Ideal for quiet areas, Birch standard low-noise models are the quietest and most affordable options.

ROWAN HEAT PUMP

The Rowan is part of our range of R290 heat pumps, offering an affordable, low carbon solution with superb heat service. Compact and easy to install, our Rowan range goes up to 375KW at -5C ambient.

LARCH HEAT PUMP

The Larch cascade heat pump is a combination of our R290 air source heat pump and R600a water source heat pump. This system closely matches a traditional boiler system’s flow and return temperatures of 82⁰C / 71⁰C.

What is R290?

R290 is a natural refrigerant using propane, widely recognised for its sustainability and efficiency, making it increasingly popular in air source heat pumps. In these systems, R290 transfers heat from the outside air by cycling between liquid and vapour states, creating usable energy for central heating systems.

This eco-friendly option has a very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 3, in contrast to traditional refrigerants like R32, which has a GWP of 675. R290 heat pumps are ideal for medium temperature requirements, and are an affordable, low carbon solution that provides excellent heating performance.

The Benefits of R290 Heat Pumps

  • Very Low GWP: R290 (propane) has a very low Global Warming Potential (GWP) of just 3, significantly lower than other refrigerants, making it an environmentally conscious choice.
  • Zero Ozone Depletion: R290 has zero ozone-depleting potential, reducing environmental impact compared to other refrigerants.
  • High Efficiency: R290’s thermodynamic properties enable heat pumps to operate at high efficiency, which can lower energy costs and provide effective heating.
  • Performance in Low Temperatures: R290 heat pumps are designed to operate efficiently even in cold conditions, suitable for year-round heating.
  • Reduced Refrigerant Volume: R290 systems often use less refrigerant, supporting sustainability by minimising resource use.
  • Safety & Reliability: R290 heat pumps are built with advanced safety features and undergo rigorous testing to ensure reliable, secure operation, giving businesses peace of mind while supporting environmental goals.
  • Low Noise Levels: R290 heat pumps are designed with features that minimise operational noise, contributing to a quieter environment.
  • Long-term Cost Savings: High-efficiency performance can help reduce running costs over time, benefiting both business and residential users.
  • Sustainable Choice for Net Zero Goals: With ultra-low carbon emissions, R290 heat pumps contribute towards achieving net-zero targets.

Why Choose an R290 Heat Pump for Your Business?

At Clade Engineering, we’re committed to tackling climate change, our R290 heat pumps stand out as one of the most eco-friendly and efficient heating solutions available today. Using propane, R290 systems help businesses drastically reduce their environmental impact compared to conventional boilers. This ultra-low carbon alternative supports climate goals without compromising on heating performance, making it ideal for those committed to sustainable practices.

By opting for R290, businesses are proactively choosing a solution that meets or exceeds regulatory requirements, helping to protect the environment and reduce the risk of future compliance issues.

R290 Heat Pump Installation

R290 heat pumps are versatile and suitable for a wide range of properties, from modern new builds to older homes and retrofitted spaces. Proper insulation is key to achieving optimal performance, so it’s important to assess your property’s insulation levels before installation. Working closely with a qualified Clade installation engineer is essential, as they’ll help tailor the setup to your specific needs, including temperature preferences, hot water demand, and the best location for the unit.

R290 HEAT PUMPS FAQ

R290 is a natural refrigerant with a GWP of 3.

60C normally and up to 65C in some applications.

The heat pump will detect the leak, it will then shut down and ventilate the housing. An alarm will be raised with a visible beacon on the heat pump itself.

The highest COP an R290 heat pump can achieve is about 4.5.

R290 is flammable and needs to be managed properly. You should carry out a site risk assessment which will define the specific measures required. Clade will provide the product and some general information required for this. This should be completed as part of the design process, we recommend a HAZID/HAZOP approach.

We build 50KW, 100KW, 150KW and 200KW models. These can be installed in a cascade arrangement for higher capacities.

The biggest issue is the flammability. Otherwise R290 is low climate impact, cheap and available plus its high performance.

Yes, we offer full design and specification support at all project stages. We also provide service and maintenance services post installation.

Clade’s Engineering team will happily review your project and make recommendations for you. You can also benefit from our performance guarantee which gives full peace of mind.
