R290 Heat Pumps

Clade Engineering’s Aspen is our R290 heat pump, making use of non-F-Gas refrigerants. This solution excels in providing sustainability for smaller applications up to 200KW, or multiple units can be used for larger heat demands. Aspen is a more affordable, environmentally friendly solution which still delivers superb heat service.

Our R290 Propane Air Source Heat Pump

The Aspen is our R290/Propane air source heat pump. It’s ideal for smaller applications up to 200KW. The Aspen is a more affordable, low carbon solution for lower flow temperature but still delivers superb low-carbon heat service with a low GWP refrigerant.

It offers flow temperatures up to 65⁰C and return temperatures in the range of 40⁰C to 50⁰C.

The Birch serves as our flagship r290 propane heat pump, earning praise for its aesthetic appeal, and is also available in a low-noise version. It is offered in two models: the 85/50 and the 120/75, providing 85 and 120KW at +7°C ambient temperature, or 50 and 75KW at -5°C ambient.

Our new Rowan range of r290 propane heat pumps takes over from the Birch at 150KW and goes up to 375KW at -5C ambient.

It complements our Aspen range being more compact and with a reversible header for easy installation.

Rowan features Siemens controls and full connectivity so we can connect and monitor your heat pumps for grid flex and performance. We can also provide acoustic attenuation for noise sensitive sites as an option, all in any colour you like.

All Clade heat pumps use natural refrigerant for the lowest environmental impact and are manufactured in the UK with full support provided by our engineers here in the UK.

R290 Refrigerant

Protecting against climate change is one of our core values at Clade Engineering, and the natural refrigerant R290 used in our Aspen heat pump offers clear advantages over other options.

Used in a vapour compression cycle, R290 refrigerant boasts a low GWP (global warming potential), will not be subject to regulatory restrictions and is widely available at low cost.

R290 heat pumps are ideal for medium temperature requirements, and are an affordable, low carbon solution that provides superb heat service.

What Are R290 Heat Pumps?

When referring to an R290 heat pump, the core difference between it and other solutions is in the type of refrigerant used. R290 is a form of propane which offers a flexible and cost-effective refrigerant option, with a GPW (global warming potential) of just 3.

Unlike CO2, R290 operates at different temperatures. Despite a maximum flow temperature of 65C, it’s usually operated at 60C with a 40C return temperature, making it a “mid-range” refrigerant. The applications of R290 are varied, and include commercial and industrial air conditioning and refrigeration.

R290 is now typically used in new refrigeration and air conditioning systems, and is heralded as one of the most environmentally friendly solutions for heat pumps.

Why Choose An R290 Pump?

Increasing legislation regarding the use of harmful refrigerants has led to a new generation of eco-conscious heat pumps. Choosing an R290 heat pump marks a mindful decision to embrace a sustainable and environmentally friendly heating solution.

With its low Global Warming Potential (GWP), R290 has become a preferred choice, gaining traction as a response to mounting concerns about the environmental impact of conventional refrigerants like CFCs and HFCs.

By selecting an R290 heat pump, businesses contribute to a more sustainable future while enjoying the benefits of an efficient and environmentally responsible heating solution.

What Does Switching to R290 Mean For You?

Making the switch to an R290 refrigerant solution demonstrates a firm commitment to the environment, and to the ongoing fight against climate change. Aside from a reduction in carbon footprint, the energy efficiency of R290 heat pumps can lead to long-term cost reductions and increased sustainability.

Besides adhering to regulations aimed toward phasing out high-GWP refrigerants, R290 heat pumps offer a future-proof option that will enhance your brand image among eco-conscious customers.

R290 is a natural refrigerant with a GWP of 3.

60C normally and up to 65C in some applications.

The heat pump will detect the leak, it will then shut down and ventilate the housing. An alarm will be raised with a visible beacon on the heat pump itself.

The highest COP an R290 heat pump can achieve is about 4.5.

R290 is flammable and needs to be managed properly. You should carry out a site risk assessment which will define the specific measures required. Clade will provide the product and some general information required for this. This should be completed as part of the design process, we recommend a HAZID/HAZOP approach.

We build 50KW, 100KW, 150KW and 200KW models. These can be installed in a cascade arrangement for higher capacities.

The biggest issue is the flammability. Otherwise R290 is low climate impact, cheap and available plus its high performance.

Yes, we offer full design and specification support at all project stages. We also provide service and maintenance services post installation.

Clade’s Engineering team will happily review your project and make recommendations for you. You can also benefit from our performance guarantee which gives full peace of mind.

To give our heat pumps customers complete peace of mind. Following installation, commissioning and a 6 month run-in period the actual performance will be assessed against predicted performance. If the heat pump does not meet the guaranteed performance we will refund the cost of the heat pump and remove it from site.
