If the heat pump does not meet the guaranteed performance we will refund the cost of the heat pump and remove it from site.
WHAT ARE WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMPS?
A water source heat pump is a renewable energy source that provides a genuine alternative to your traditional heating systems in both home and commercial properties. It absorbs energy from surrounding water through a submerged network of pipes. Any property that is located close to a large water source could benefit from water source heat pumps. The energy is absorbed from water sources such as lakes, rivers, ponds, aquifers, and more. The same unit as our ground source heat pump is used for this, but the way the heat is collected and the heat source itself, are of course, different. As we all look for ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint and take control of our energy bills, our range of heat pumps are the perfect example of a cost-effective, efficient alternative.

WHY INVEST IN WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMP
There are a few good reasons why you should invest in a water source heat pump. They are highly regarded as an affordable and effective option when looking at different ways to switch to a low-carbon heating source for your building. Effective for a wide range of building types, using water as your heating source could help you to maximise the heating of your business or home whilst taking care of energy bills and reducing your carbon footprint.
To begin with, water source heat pumps provide a faster heat transfer rate when compared with a ground source heat pump, with temperatures around 5-6 degrees higher in most cases. The system is efficient, with water always close to the pipes and a constant source of energy replenishment is present with water source heat pumps. Costs are reduced up-front too, due to the lack of drilling and digging required to set up a water source heat pump.

WHAT APPLICATIONS CAN WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMPS BE USED FOR?
Any large water source that is located close to a building can be used as the ideal energy source for our heat pumps. A water source heat pump can easily and effectively extract heat from the water source, transforming it into clean, renewable energy for a property close by. A water source heat pump can be used to provide heat and hot water for a property and are a viable alternative to traditional heating systems for a variety of applications and property types. You’ll find our range of water source heat pumps are used to heat businesses close to water, houses, boats, and any other type of property close to a large body of water.

HOW DOES A WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMP WORK?
A water source heat pump system works by absorbing heat energy from a large water source. This heat is taken from the surrounding water in a similar way to how ground source heat pumps extract heat from the ground. A submerged network of pipes, typically a closed loop system such as pond mats, transfer heat energy from the water to the heat pump. This is then compressed, and the temperature increased before it is delivered to the property to be used as part of the heating system (to radiators or underfloor heating) or for hot water. If the property in question is situated close to a body of water, it is a no brainer to install a cost-effective water source heat pump.

WATER SOURCES THAT CAN BE USED WITH A WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMP
There are many different types of water sources that are used effectively for water source heat pumps to be efficient. As a renewable energy source and a low-carbon option for heating homes and providing hot water, installing a water source heat pump is the perfect option. If you are close to a water source (within about 100 metres), your property is most likely a suitable location for a water heat pump. Water sources that are suitable include rivers, streams, ponds, lakes, and the sea, to name just a few. You can also find good heat sources in underground aquifers, sewers, industrial effluents, and wells. For a closed loop system, you need a body of water near your property. For an open loop system, you will require the space for two boreholes. Our expert team will assess and advise.

OPEN-LOOP VS CLOSED-LOOP FOR WATER SOURCE HEAT PUMPS
CLOSED-LOOP SYSTEMS
Water source heat pumps work by extracting thermal energy from a water source close to your property and then converting the collected energy into heat and hot water. This can then be used to heat a property. Water source heat pumps require a body of water to be nearby, which makes them ideal for homeowners that have a lake, river, stream or borehole nearby.
A series of pipes are placed underground to facilitate the heating process. The system is installed into a specified water source. How it will work is dependent upon the size of the property that needs to be heated and the volume of water nearby.
Closed-loop systems effectively extract heat energy from the source by using an antifreeze liquid. Closed-loop systems are more common than open-loop systems and are better for particular property layouts. Closed-loop water heat pump systems are ideal for properties with a sufficient body of water close to the property, so long as the necessary piping can be routed underground to the water. They’re generally a cheaper option, too. This is because they’re simpler to install and don’t require the same specific conditions for installation as open-loop systems.
CLOSED-LOOP SYSTEM BENEFITS
- Reduces carbon emissions and CO2 impact.
- Can heat both home and water.
- Reliable performance throughout the year.
- Simple to install.
- More cost-effective than closed-loop water source heat pump systems.
OPEN-LOOP SYSTEMS
Just like closed-loop systems, these water source heat pumps operate by efficiently extracting thermal from a water source close to the property which requires heating. The thermal energy is collected and converted into heat and hot water. An adequate body of water close by is required for water source heat pumps to function. This makes them ideal for homeowners who have a lake, river, stream or borehole close by.
Water flows through the pump and the heat is extracted by the open-loop system installed and then discharged back to its source. This makes them super efficient — more efficient than closed-loop pumps. However, there are additional regulations to consider from either the Environment Agency for England and Wales or the Scottish Environment Protection Agency (SEPA). You’ll need to gain consent from either of these bodies to install and use one of these systems. This is because these systems actively pull water into the system for operation, and the water needs to be clean, safe and sufficient for the system to draw and filter the water to and from the main water source.
OPEN LOOP SYSTEM BENEFITS
- More efficient than closed loop systems.
- Ideal for projects that require simple, non-intrusive installation.
- Works year-round, including through the Winter.
- Can heat both home and water.
- Low carbon source of heating.

About UsHEAT PUMPS FAQ
Clade Engineering is able to provide heat pumps as either air, ground, or water source. The most suitable type of heat pump depends on several factors related to your property. Generally, air source heat pumps are the most popular because they have the fewest requirements to install. Any type of heat pump can provide hot water and heating to your building.
Heat pumps using CO2 refrigerant as the heat source are friendly to the environment because the CO2 they use stays contained within the appliance and does not get released into the atmosphere. Furthermore, the CO2 we use in our heat pumps has the lowest global warming potential (GWP) of 1 compared to 1000’s for other refrigerants which will all significantly reduce the carbon footprint of your building.
Clade are the industry leaders in heat pump technology. As the heat in buildings challenge became clearer, Clade began the R&D for a new range of heat pumps which would provide a solution for a growing market. The first heat pump was installed in a Co-Op store and achieved a staggering SCOP of 3.7. We have over 36 years of experience and all of our systems are designed and manufactured in the UK.
Our heat pumps meet environmental standards by using a natural refrigerant like CO2. It has a Global Warming Potential (GWP) of 1, which reduces both cost and emissions.
